Palm desert vacation?

So from march 31-april 3 my boyfriend and i will be taking a trip to palm desert for our spring break. We are staying at the Jw Marriott, and i was wondering how far is this hotel from good hiking? Also how far is it from downtown/good restaurants/shopping ect.. Also, if anyone else has any fun suggestions to do while we are there i would love to hear.. we are outdoorsy people who are always down to do something fun and adventurous. I know there is the palm springs tram what exactly does that consist of? And lastly i heard you can rent ATVS around there is that true? Any input, answers, or suggestions will be very helpful.
